Adding Items to a Menu

menu-screen2.png

You can add different link types into your menu, these are split between panes left of the menu you’re currently editing.

  1. Locate the pane entitled Pages.
  2. Within this pane, select the View All link to bring up a list of all the currently published Pages on your site.
  3. Select the Pages that you want to add by clicking the checkbox next to each Page’s title.
  4. Click the Add to Menu button located at the bottom of this pane to add your selection(s) to the menu that you created in the previous step.
  5. Click the Save Menu button once you’ve added all the menu items you want.

Your custom menu has now been saved.

Note The Screen Options allow you to choose which items you can use to add to a menu. Certain items, like Tags are hidden by default.

Deleting a Menu Item

menu-screen3.png
  1. Locate the menu item that you want to remove in the menu editor window
  2. Click on the arrow icon in the top right-hand corner of the menu item/box to expand it.
  3. Click on the Remove link. The menu item/box will be immediately removed.
  4. Click the Save Menu button to save your changes.

  1. Click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner of the menu item to expand it.
  2. Enter the values for the required fields that you want to assign to the item.
  3. Click the Save Menu button to save your changes.

Creating Multi-level Menus

When planning the structure of your menu, it helps to think of each menu item as a heading in a formal report document. In a formal report, main section headings (Level 1 headings) are the nearest to the left of the page; sub-section headings (Level 2 headings) are indented slightly further to the right; any other subordinate headings (Level 3, 4, etc) within the same section are indented even further to the right.

The WordPress menu editor allows you to create multi-level menus using a simple ‘drag and drop’ interface. Drag menu items up or down to change their order of appearance in the menu. Drag menu items left or right in order to create sub-levels within your menu.

To make one menu item a subordinate of another, you need to position the ‘child’ underneath its ‘parent’ and then drag it slightly to the right.

  1. Position the mouse over the ‘child’ menu item.
  2. Whilst holding the left mouse button, drag it to the right.
  3. Release the mouse button.
  4. Repeat these steps for each sub-menu item.
  5. Click the Save Menu button in the Menu Editor to save your changes.

Adding Your Menu to Your Site

If your current theme supports custom menus, you will be able to add your new menu to one of the Theme Locations.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the menu editor window.
  2. In the section titled Theme locations, click the check box for the location where you want your menu to appear.
  3. Click Save menu once you’ve made your selection.

No matter if you’re new to the digital world or have been maintaining an online presence for years, chances are you’ve heard of WordPress. But what is WordPress and how can it assist in your digital marketing goals? This article will explain the powerful tool and how you can utilize it to increase your business online.

    What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free, open-source, content management system (CMS) that allows you to create powerful, dynamic websites. Originally created as blogging software, WordPress has evolved into a tool that perfectly handles eCommerce, memberships, portfolios and more. There is truly no limit to the types of websites you can create with WordPress and with its intuitive interface, updating and maintaining your website is quick and easy.

    History of WordPress

WordPress was launched in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as a fork of the b2 cafelog project. The idea was to give web developers and website creators an easier way to make changes to their website without having to use HTML.

Compared to the long list of features users can access with today’s out-of-the-box WordPress installation, the first iteration of WordPress only included a texturized engine, links manager, XHTML 1.1 compliant templates, an administration interface, and the ability to do manual excerpts and new templates. Suffice to say, the platform has come a long way!

Because of its open-source nature, WordPress has grown into a powerful tool for website creation and management. Though it started as the brainchild of two men, a large community of contributors continue to push the platform forward. In addition, hundreds of developers create thousands of helpful plugins to extend the functionality of WordPress.

The WordPress community is strong and because of that strength, WordPress will remain a robust, future-proof tool for website development.

    WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

If you searched for WordPress online, you may have noticed that there are two sites: WordPress.org and WordPress.com. For someone new to WordPress, this is probably confusing. However, the difference is pretty simple.

WordPress.org is the fully free, open-source platform that businesses, web developers, and website creators can use with a number of hosting companies, like InMotion Hosting, to build and maintain their website. It’s fully customizable — giving you the ability to install plugins, add themes and implement custom code to make the website your own.

WordPress.com is the for-profit platform owned by the company Automattic, which was also created by Matt Mullenweg — founder of WordPress. WordPress.com is a “website as a service,” allowing users to get their web presence up-and-running quickly with both hosting services and a website. However, WordPress.com isn’t completely free as it charges for domain registration and other features.

In addition, though WordPress.com is extremely easy to use, that ease-of-use is at the sacrifice of flexibility and customization. With WordPress.com, users on Free, Personal, or Premium plans cannot install third-party themes and plugins. Unless a user wants a simple website for a hobby, this restriction significantly reduces the website’s functionality and its ability to grow in the future.

Overall, WordPress.org is the 100% free, fully-customizable, open-source platform that can be used with most hosting providers. WordPress.com is the for-profit “website as a site” platform that gives users a very simple website but without the ability to install third-party plugins and themes.

Why WordPress – Ease of Use

As mentioned, WordPress is a very powerful tool for creating and maintaining a robust website. With the platform, you can build any website you envision. In addition, with the WordPress ecosystem, you can easily customize your website with third-party plugins and themes to meet your business’ needs.

Updating WordPress plugins is vitally important for website security and usability. Keeping your plugins up-to-date helps harden your website security — closing doors hackers could use to access your website. It also ensures a positive user experience for your website visitors, making sure they are interacting with the most recent and compatible software.

Updates are rolled out constantly, which can make the task of updating plugins seem endless. When updating plugins after a large WordPress update and/or when newer versions of the plugins are released by the developers, you can use one bulk action or update plugins individually.  Separate plugin updates are actually preferred by some website owners as it helps mitigate potential theme issues that could arise after updating a plugin. For example, if you update a plugin and then notice an area of your website is broken, you can simply disable the plugin to fix it.

    Update WordPress Plugins Manually

Using the steps below, you’ll be able to quickly update all of your WordPress plugins.

    1. Login to your WordPress dashboard.
    2. There are three areas you can navigate to for updating plugins. 1) By clicking on the circle-shaped like two arrows in the top header of your dashboard. 2) By clicking Updates towards the top of the left sidebar menu. 3) By clicking Plugins further down in the left sidebar menu.
    3. If you click on the icon in the header or Updates in the left sidebar, you will be taken to a screen showing all updates available, both plugin and theme updates. To update your plugins, check Select All or select only the plugins you want to update. Then click Update Plugins. You will see a success message after the updates are complete.

You can also update your theme in the above area following the same steps!
    4. If you click on Plugins further down in the left sidebar, you will be taken to a page showing a list of your plugins only. Similar to the above, select the plugins you want to update, select Update under the Bulk Actions dropdown, then click Apply. You can also click the update now link under the individual plugins to update them separately. You will see a success message after the updates are complete.
